Holmes County History
Holmes County, Ohio was formed from sections of Wayne, Tuscarawas and Coshocton counties. It is named after Major Andrew Hunter Holmes. On Jan. 4, 1825 the state legislature officially designated Holmes County as an Ohio county.
The Port Washington Road is said to be the first state highway authorized by the Ohio General Assembly in the early 1830’s and gave Holmes County access to the Ohio Erie Canal, Holmes County now had a way to ship its products to an outside market. Within ten years the population of the county doubled and its wealth tripled.
In 1854 the railroad was completed from Millersburg to Akron and at long last a new market was open to the merchants and farmers of Holmes County. Millersburg became the hub for farmers from out lying villages to bring their products to the railroad for shipping to Akron and Cleveland.
The two most important historical economic influences for Holmes County were the canal and the railroad.
